Iran’s supreme president announces triumph over Israel, US
The conflict erupted after Israel launched attacks that killed senior Iranian military figures and targeted Iranian nuclear facilities. In response, Iran carried out retaliatory strikes, prompting a direct US military intervention. American forces used bunker-busting bombs on Iran’s fortified nuclear site in Fordow, as well as two other locations.
Khamenei claimed that Iran’s counterattacks had significantly weakened Israel, pushing the US to intervene to protect its ally. He argued that Washington’s involvement was a sign of desperation, asserting that the US “achieved nothing” despite its military actions. He also downplayed American claims that Iran’s nuclear capabilities had been crippled.
The supreme leader praised a retaliatory Iranian missile strike on a US base in Qatar, which was reportedly preceded by a warning to Qatari officials and caused no damage. Khamenei described the strike as a symbolic blow to the US and warned that Iran could strike American targets in the region if further provoked.
These were Khamenei’s first public remarks since the US airstrikes. A ceasefire between Iran and Israel was reached earlier in the week, reportedly under pressure from US President Donald Trump, who urged Israel to stop its military campaign.
Israel has defended its initial actions as necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons—a claim Tehran has consistently denied. Iran maintains that its nuclear program is for peaceful purposes. In protest of the recent attacks, Tehran announced it will halt all cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which has previously stated it found no evidence that Iran was building a nuclear bomb.
