Qatar's Emir, Trump Hold Urgent Call Amid Middle East Tensions

(MENAFN) Qatari Emir Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani and US President Donald Trump held an urgent phone call Wednesday to address rapidly evolving regional developments, Qatar's Emiri Diwan announced in an official statement.

The conversation, reported by the Qatar News Agency, centered on regional and international efforts to ease tensions and advance stability across a Middle East still reeling from months of escalating conflict.

According to the statement, Emir Tamim stressed the paramount importance of pursuing political and diplomatic channels over military ones, calling for meaningful dialogue among all parties as the only sustainable path toward consolidating regional security and preventing further escalation.

The two leaders also underscored the urgent need to safeguard maritime navigation, protect strategic waterways, and secure the uninterrupted flow of global energy and supply chains — a concern that has taken on acute significance since Tehran moved to close the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most critical shipping arteries.

The call comes against a backdrop of sharply deteriorating regional stability. Tensions ignited in late February after the US and Israel launched coordinated airstrikes on Iran, killing more than 3,000 people — among them then-Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and numerous senior military commanders and government officials. Tehran responded with retaliatory strikes against Israel and Gulf states hosting US military installations, while simultaneously shutting off the Strait of Hormuz to global shipping.

A Pakistan-brokered ceasefire took effect on April 8, temporarily halting the worst of the fighting. Diplomatic efforts to forge a broader and more durable agreement have continued in the weeks since, with Qatar — long a key regional mediator — playing a central role in back-channel negotiations.
